# How licensing works

AR 51 software is protected by **machine-bound licensing**. This page is a high-level overview; step-by-step activation and transfers live in the customer download portal.

## The model

- A **license key is bound to a machine** — it's generated from that machine's hardware.
- The software **validates the license online periodically**.
- An **offline grace period** lets the software keep working without a connection (target: **24 hours**).
- **One customer account** can hold **multiple machine keys** (e.g. several capture PCs).

## Transfers

License transfers (moving a key to a different machine) are currently handled by **AR 51 support**. Self-service transfer may be offered in the future.

## Activation

Activation and detailed instructions are provided in the **download portal** (gated, per-customer). See:

- Activation
- Licensing FAQ

:::note
This public page explains *what* the model is. Anything account- or key-specific (downloads, activation steps, transfer requests) is kept in the authenticated download portal.
